Marine environmental protection is essential part of public health and global nature conservation. One of the major threats and hazards is the production and use of the highly toxic pesticide DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane). Although it is legally banned by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants as an international treaty, signed in 2001 and effective from May 2004, it has recently been recommended again by WHO (World Health Organization) to fight malaria. This is heavily disappointing, since proven effective biological alternatives for prevention of malaria are available.
